Saya is the generic term for the complete sword scabbard. The scabbard consists of 2 body elements and several components, each of which has its own name. We describe these components in alphabetical order:

Koiguchi
Translated: carp mouth. This is the element at the opening of the sword scabbard.
This element is often reinforced with horn or metal. In rare cases, inexpensive plastic is also used.

Kojiri
Term for the end cap of the sword sheath of a katana. It forms the end of the saya. It is made of horn or metal.

Kurigata
Kurigata is the name of the holder for the sageo. It holds the belt and also prevents the sword from "slipping through" when it is worn on the belt. The kurigata can be made of wood, horn or metal.
The openings of the kurigata can also be decorated with so-called shito domes.

Sageo
The ribbon for the saya is called sageo. Depending on the intended use, there are different ways in which the sageo can be tied. The sageo is often tied more elaborately for decorative purposes, whereas it is tied more simply for a sword for practical use. As there are many variations of the sageo, the individual article is dedicated to it. Sageo dedicated.
