Tsuka Ito - The hilt of the samurai sword

Tsuka Ito of a Katana

Table of contents

The hilt of a samurai sword is called tsuka ito or simply ito.

Materials

The main differences in the grip tape are the materials used. The strap can be made of cotton, silk, leather or synthetic materials.
When selecting the material, attention should be paid to the type of use of the sword:
Synthetic materials are often inexpensive and still look classy. However, they absorb sweat less well than natural materials.

Colours

There are no limits to the choice of colour. The grip tapes can be produced in all colours. As a rule, we use a grip tape in a harmonious colour scheme for the Sageo used.
It tends to make more sense to use darker-coloured grip tapes for swords for practical use. Soiling can be seen more quickly on light-coloured materials.
