There are different versions of the tsuba. We explain common terms here using a tsuba that has both kogai hitsu ana and kozuga hitsu ana, although these are not necessarily present in every tsuba.
The terms in alphabetical order:
Ji or Hira Ji | The main surface of the stitch blade |
Kogai Hitsu Ana | Hole in the tsuba for kogai (hairpin) |
Kozuga Hitsu Ana | Hole in the tsuba for kozuga (by-knife) |
Mimi | The edge of the tsuba |
Nakago Ana | Centre hole in the blade through which the tang is guided |
Seppa Dai | "Support surface" for the Seppa |
