There are different versions of the tsuba. We explain common terms here using a tsuba that has both kogai hitsu ana and kozuga hitsu ana, although these are not necessarily present in every tsuba.

The terms in alphabetical order:

Ji or Hira Ji
 The main surface of the stitch blade
Kogai Hitsu Ana
 Hole in the tsuba for kogai (hairpin)
Kozuga Hitsu Ana
 Hole in the tsuba for kozuga (by-knife)
Mimi
 The edge of the tsuba
Nakago Ana
 Centre hole in the blade through which the tang is guided
Seppa Dai
 "Support surface" for the Seppa
