Samurai and Katana Video Games - Our Top 5

Table of contents

Samurai and katana are important elements in video games ranging from tactical games to classic beat-'em-ups. Our top 5 from this spectrum.

5th place: Mortal Kombat

The popular game series Mortal Kombatwhich can even be seen as a film on Netflix, is of course not a classic samurai epic. However, with the popular main character Scorpion, who fights with ninja techniques, the game still achieves 5th place in our ranking.

4th place: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro is a samurai game in which you run through a world as a shinobi in the third-person perspective and have to fight one enemy after the other.

The plot is based on real elements from the Sengoku period of Japanese history. However, the game also has many fantasy elements.
A very challenging game that requires skill but is also a lot of fun.

3rd place: Total War: Shogun 2

Shogun 2 is the samurai version of the popular strategy game Total War. The action takes place in 16th century Japan and the player must try to gain control of the whole of Japan as a clan leader. Historically, this corresponds to the events in Japan at that time and Shogun 2 is a must for all fans of the Total War series.

2nd place: Assassin's Creed Shadows

At the time of publication of this article Assassin's Creed Shadows has not yet been released. But the discussion about the game in advance is already record-breaking.

Apart from the usual blah-blah that always arises in connection with samurai, such as historically inaccurate portrayal and the like, the choice of main characters Yasuke (a person who actually existed in a similar form in Japanese history) and Naoe led to controversy that has rarely been seen before in a computer game. Even Elon Musk had to comment negatively on the subject, even though he is actually a big fan of the Shiba Inu shown in the trailer 🙂

If Assassin's Creed Shadows continues the quality of the other instalments in the famous video game series, it will definitely be a contender for first place!

We are big fans of the Assassin's Creed games and will probably even be showing some gameplay from the new instalment on our YouTube channel be published.

1st place: Ghost of Tsushima

With Ghost of Tsushima the developers at Sucker Punch have landed a real surprise success. Based on the real events of the Mongol invasions of Japan at the beginning of the 13th century, they created a story centred around the main character Jin Sakai. The game was developed with a great deal of passion and countless details.

The game itself is simply fun and captivates you. For us, the clear number 1 among samurai games.
