Michonne's sword has become famous through the TV series The Walking Dead and is one of the most popular katana today. We tell you what this sword is all about.
Who is Michonne from the Walking Dead TV series?
Michonne is one of the characters from the world-famous comic and television series The Walking Dead. The comic books on which the TV series is based were written by Robert Kirkman. It is a post-apocalyptic horror series in which a group of survivors follow former sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes. They struggle to stay alive as a global pandemic has wiped out almost half of humanity. In the process, the "deceased" rise from the dead and mutate into human flesh-eating zombies, called "biters" in the series. They pose a constant threat to the survivors.
Michonne first appears in the comic series in volume 4, issue 19. In the TV series, she makes her first appearance at the end of season 2. In both the comic and the series, she appears with two zombies whose arms and lower jaws have been severed to stop them from attacking humans. The two serve as her disguise. They are her ex-boyfriend and his best friend. She blames the former for the death of her 3-year-old daughter.
Her weapon, which she particularly likes to use to decapitate biters, is a samurai sword known simply as "the katana".

The katana is Michonne's standard weapon. It is particularly effective at severing body parts from zombies, making it an important and loyal companion for Michonne.
The katana is characterised by its unmistakable appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade and a long handle that allows the katana to be used with both hands. Its sharpness and strength are outstanding, as is usual for katana from historical feudal Japan.
Although the katana is known as the main weapon of Michonne, who uses it to defend herself and her group, it has ironically been used twice to kill good people and friends respectively. This happened firstly when Philip "The Governor" Blake decapitated the devout Hershel Greene and when Pete Anderson accidentally slashed Reg Monroe's neck.
One special feature of the katana is that it does not have its own name. Actress Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne in the TV series, answered the question of the sword's name in an interview: "It's between me and them. They'd be hurt if I shared it." So there will probably never be an official name for Michonne's sword.
