The components of the handle can vary slightly depending on the design. Here we show the components of a handle that has a Tsuka-Ito (strap for the handle winding).

The terms in alphabetical order:

Fuchi
Grip clamp at the end of the sword handle
Ito
Or Tsuka Ito: the name for the strap for the sword hilt
Kashira
End cap of the centreboard handle
Mekugi
Pin that goes through both sides of the sword hilt and the tang, holding the blade and hilt together. It is inserted through the holes provided for this purpose (Mekugi Ana).
Menuki
Decorative element on the handle
