Position on the centreboard

The habaki sits at the transition of the blade to the tang between Blade and Tsubaor Seppa.
It is usually made of brass and usually simple or not decorated at all.
It is not part of the blade, but as it fits best into this category in our categorisation, this article is in the blade category.

Function of the Habaki

Although they are rather inconspicuous, they have an important function for the sword. They ensure that the sword is held in the Scabbard.
The element is slightly wider than the blade and fits perfectly into the opening (koi guchi) of the sword sheath. This prevents the sword from slipping out of the scabbard and also enables the type of sword drawing that plays a major role in Asian martial arts.
