Plastic swords are relatively new on the market.

Compared to standard wooden weapons, plastic training weapons offer a number of advantages. For example, they are much more resistant and durable.
As wood is a finite resource, it is only a matter of time before training weapons made of polypropylene plastic replace traditional wooden training swords.
