The classic garments for most Japanese sword martial arts are hakama and gi.
Hakama is the traditional pleated skirt with wide flared legs designed to conceal one's movements.
According to tradition, the 7 pleats in the trousers symbolise the 7 virtues of the samurai.
Gi is the jacket worn in many Japanese martial arts. It has three-quarter length sleeves and must be strong enough to withstand gripping and pulling.
