Product description:
Beautifully crafted Shin Gunto sword with a sharp blade and neatly crafted hamon.
Very high quality replica of a Japanese military sword from the Second World War.
The blade is made of folded steel and was forged by hand in the Shinogi Zukuri style. It has also been differentially hardened with clay hardening. It has a beautiful hamon in suguha form (straight) and was finished by hand, which accentuates the hamon well. The Maru blade has an attractive pattern due to the folded steel and the area above the shinogi is polished to a high lustre. The steel used has a carbon content of more than 0.7 per cent and has been hardened to 55 HRC at the cutting edge.
The Gunto Saya is sheathed in metal and has a protective leather sheath. The handle resembles a Tachi Handle, the binding corresponds to the Japanese standard with integrated Hishigami.
The handle has a locking mechanism for the sword, as is customary in military use.
A modern sword that fulfils high quality requirements despite its relatively low price.
Dimensions and weight:
- Total length with scabbard: approx. 104 cm
- Blade length from tsuba: approx. 73 cm
- Handle length: approx. 27 cm
- Weight without saya: approx. 1070 grams

The history of the Shin Gunto sword
The Shin Gunto sword has a different shape to the old swords of the Japanese military. In the 1930s, the national-eastern government of Japan wanted to revive the old, glorious times of the samurai and the swords of the Japanese army were given a new design.
The design of the swords is based on the appearance of tachi swords, which were the main sword of samurai warriors from the 10th to the 15th century.
This orientation towards old values should motivate the soldiers and remind them of their historical responsibility.
Shin Gunto means new army sword. As its appearance differs from the older, more sabre-like swords, it has its own name.
After the Second World War, Japan was occupied by the USA and the swords of the Japanese military were withdrawn.
Many of these swords were taken to the USA as spoils of war.
That's why there are so many Shin Gunto swords in the USA.
